Washington Heights and Monsey have official KAJ shuls? Do the promote Torah Im Derech Eretz? Do other communities? TIDE communities historically were very comprehensive: mikvah, kashrus, schools, chesed. They were self-contained and the TIDE philosophy permeated throughout. Certainly, TIDE ideas are everywhere, in both yeshivish eduation and Modern Orthodox outlooks on engagement with the world. But would you call these TIDE communities or communities with a TIDE influence?

You can argue that much of the American Yeshiva world has TIDE elements in that kids get a secular education half the day. Now, I doubt they tie this back to their religious service, which is an important part of TIDE. Most eventually will go to earn a living. Now I doubt that they look upon that as contributing to society, which is an important part of TIDE. So I'd say there are elements. It's my argument that even Eastern Europe practiced TIDE but not a Hirschian TIDE. The Maharal says on the Mishnah that TIDE means not just making a living but hanhaga tiv`it, "operating in the natural world." Most people are going to do that in any society. So I'd say there is a TIDE even in the Yeshiva world but not a Hirschian TIDE.
